DRONE ON is the second edition of BUZZKILL, a zine publication created by Tessa Carlin, Denisse Damken, and Katherine Hong. Created for a final project for their Honeybee Colonies class at Parsons, each edition explores the intersection of bees in various areas of the arts, whether it is poetry, music, or landscaping. With diverse creative practices and interests, each artist was encouraged to design and publish in a way that would best serve their zine's topic and strive for artistic integrity. BUZZKILL also aims to uphold the history around zines and embraces the DIY-culture and distribution and sharing etiquette of printed matter.
DRONE ON focuses on drone music, or "dronology," and takes the reader through the history of drone music by examining traditional musical instruments and the modern iteration of drone as a genre. It also discusses the psychological effects of listening to bee sounds in Slovenia, who uses the buzzing of bees as a form of relaxation therapy.
In the latter half, the zine compiles 1960s/1970s rock artists that incorporated drone in their music. Looking to The Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones, as examples, cultural, social, and political influences on their experimental sounds are evaluated from a music journalist approach.
Printed in an edition of 8, scans of the zine's spreads can be viewed below:
